RAGA MALKAUNS with Michael Stirling
8 weeks, Mondays, 7:00 - 9:00pm,
January 16 - March 5
$108 before January 9, $151 thereafter
$20 drop-in with previous experience

Raga Malkauns is a majestic and supernatural raga of the late night. It’s mood is extraordinarily expansive and is represented by the image of a yogi (Shiva) in deep meditation, and derived from His Taandav, (cosmic dance). According to Pandit Pran Nath, Mr. Stirling’s Guru, Malkauns is considered to be one of the six major ragas in the system of North Indian classical music.

Raga singing is a classical, highly devotional and improvised musical form directly descended from ancient traditions passed on orally from teacher to disciple in the Guru-Shishya tradition.

This class is taught in the Kirana style of North Indian classical vocal music, which traces its history back 700 years to the colorful era of the mogul kings and the legendary saint and singer Gopal Nayak, who worshipped Krishna, embraced Sufism and blended these elements into a spiritual form expressed in the language of music. Students will increase their knowledge and broaden their understanding of the general elements of North Indian Classical Music (raga & tala) and its ancient cultural and historical elements. The form allows for the greatest range of expression by the vocalist, and the lyric content is concerned with divine love, the separation of lovers, nature and the seasons.

Raga class will be accompanied by tambura (the essential drone instrument) and tabla (a set of two small hand drums). These classes are open to beginners and those with experience as well. Teacher Training Elective 16 hours.

ANATOMY & MOVEMENT 102: MUSCLES - Vitality
with Wendy Hambidge

Second Quarter: 4 weeks, Wednesdays, 5:30 - 8:00pm
Classes: January 18 - February 8
$160 before January 11, $180 thereafter

This series of anatomy classes use the principles of Body-Mind Centering. The main tenant of BMC is that every part of our anatomy from micro to macro has the capacity for awareness. Not only does the mind influence the body, the body influences the mind. In this work we build awareness of the individual parts of our body. When the different systems (bones, muscles, organs, etc) of the body are clear about their specific roles, the relationship between the parts becomes more fluid and efficient. Touch, drawing, models, movement and somatic experiences are used to facilitate and understand the fascinating subject that is anatomy in these four courses.

In this beginning course we start with the bones. The skeleton provides the framework of our body. When the skeleton knows its role, the muscles can do less and movement will be more efficient. This will help bring clarity and ease to one's yoga practice.

Teacher Training Required Course 15 hours • Full 4 Quarter Course 50 hours.
Open to all students. May be taken as individual Quarters.

EXPLORATION OF THE YAMAS AND NIYAMAS
with Meaghan Gannett

A Monthly Urban Learning Retreat

3rd Saturdays, 12:30 - 4:30pm
$50 early bird by February 11, $65 thereafter

February 18: Sauca - Purity/Cleanliness

This is an on-going series of workshops exploring the Yamas and Niyamas. These are the foundations of yoga as presented by Patanjali who wrote the Yoga Sutras over 2500 years ago. The Sutras instruct how to live in the world with a healthy relationship to ourselves and all those around us. We will do intentional asana, meditation, chanting and writing designed to help illuminate our relationship with these components of yoga.

Every month we will discuss and contemplate a different Yama or Niyama and bring a practical assignment into our life outside of the classroom. With attention to our own lives, attitudes and patterns, we can become more aware and able to live with compassion, intelligence and integrity. Oh yeah... and HAPPINESS! In the end we may ask our selves, "Did I live well? Did I love well?" Following these guidelines will help the answer to those questions be "YES!"

Open to all students. Teacher Training Elective, 16 hours full Course or 4 hours Individual.

In this last series we build understanding and experience of our systems of communication. The nervous system organizes our experiences into patterns. It communicates between our inner and outer worlds. The fluids are the transportation system of the body, they lubricate every membrane. They include the blood, lymph, synovial, cerebrospinal, interstitial, and cellular fluids. The endocrine glands are the major chemical governing system and works intimately with the nervous system through our fluids and connects us to the universal.

How can we balance the Autonomic Nervous System with the Somatic Nervous System? How can we maintain our fluidity? How can balance our relationship between heaven and earth? We hold these questions and more in this series of classes.

Touch, drawing, models, movement and somatic experiences are used to facilitate our experience and understanding.
