Devi Morris Throughout my teens and twenties my life was focused around physical activity: road biking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and trail running. I mention this because in the beginning I was attracted to yoga on a gross or material level. I practiced in Tucson, Arizona where I studied Architecture, remembering the many occasions when my mates from my studio would comment that I was glowing (the Bikram days) on my return from yoga class. However, my appreciation for yoga deepened substantially after moving to Portland when I began taking Shadow/Hatha classes with my teacher, Matt Huish, at the Yoga Shala in January, 2004. I resolved to do more yoga that year, and at the time I did not realize how powerful my resolution would be. I took Matt's yoga philosophy class that spring and by October I was immersed in the Yoga Shala's Teacher Training program. Although teaching and studying Shadow Yoga is my primary focus, I will continue to learn from the amazing senior teachers that come to the Shala from the Krishnamacharya lineage. My overall intention is to teach classes that engage on more than one level, bringing awareness to the body in space and awareness to the moment. It is not about what one gains from yoga, but what one loses in the process of yoga in order to reveal something that resides below the surface. Close |
